Remembering the Cooper River Bridges

As generations age and years pass, the memories, photos and memorabilia of the Cooper River bridges and their impact on this community are slowly being lost.

The Charleston County Public Library is working to preserve

these memories for future generations by collecting photos, programs, special documents and the individual memories of area residents.

The photos and artifacts collected will be maintained as part of a permanent collection, plus the Library wants written and oral memories from those whose lives were impacted by the construction of the Grace, Pearman and Ravenel bridges.

If you have photos, programs or any special old documents about the bridges we urge you to share your memories by dropping them off at one of our 16 public library branches. You can donate items or drop them off to be scanned and returned to you.

In addition to the photos and mementoes, the Library wants personal memories - stories of people who remember the years before the Grace Bridge was built or have a significant memory or family story involving the bridges. We urge you to write down those memories so they can be kept for future generations.

Special forms for recording your memories are available at any of the branch libraries or can be downloaded above.

The information – photos, memorabilia, written memories – will be used to create exhibits at the Library’s branches and become a part of the Library’s special collection in the South Carolina Room.

If you have any questions or comments regarding this bridge project, please contact the South Carolina Room by e-mail or by phone at 805-6956.
