CCPL Reference Librarians are available to assist you with your information needs. Our experts are here to aid you in using our books, periodicals and electronic resources.

    Save us in your contacts and text us questions while you're on the go. CCPL Reference Services are free, but users may be charged a fee, depending on their calling plan.
  • E-mail a Question
    Ask-A-Question is a free reference service provided by the Charleston County Public Library. We are here to answer your reference questions by e-mail. We provide quick responses to your questions.
  • To email a question specifically related to local history or geneaology, please fill out this form.
  • Call Us
    The Telephone Reference Center (TRC) assists with research questions over the telephone. Most questions can be answered in 3 - 5 minutes. Some examples of questions include spelling, definitions and terms, brief biographical information, referrals to appropriate Websites, as well as in-depth research questions. Pick up the phone and give us a call on the TRC phone line at 843-805-6930.

  • Visit Us
    Reference librarians are available to assist you during 
     branch location business hours.
  • Reserve Us
    Reference librarians at the
     Main Library are available to work with you one-on-one, by appointment. They can help you decide where to start and what are the best resources for your research. If you would like to set up an appointment, call 843-805-6930.

Other Reference Services

  • Electronic Research Databases
    The library offers access to research and homework tools (encyclopedias, magazines, newspaper databases, etc.) that can be
    used in the library or accessed from home. In order to access the electronic databases from home, you will need to input your library card number. Please call 843-805-6930 for tips on searching the electronic databases.
  • Educator Reserves
    With two weeks notice, teachers can reserve reference materials for a specific assignment by calling 843-805-6930.
  • Interlibrary Loan
    When Charleston County Public Library resources do not meet your needs,  
    Interlibrary Loan (ILL), a mechanism for receiving materials from another library, is offered to library cardholders. You can borrow up to four materials at one time. Requests can be made from any branch location. Borrowing time is determined by the lending library.
