Photo: Section of Rainbow Row on East Bay St. c.1740-1780
In this section of our project, we have included that portion of the Grand Modell which came to be enclosed by the city walls, along with adjoining wharfs along the Cooper River. This area of Charleston in fact features a different streetscape from the rest of the city, even though the walls themselves no longer stand. Nearly all of the city's remaining cobblestone streets lie within this district, for example. Most of the narrow alleys also lie within or immediately adjacent to this area. Click on Walled City for a more detailed history of this district.
