      The article discusses writers' roles and responsibilities in researching and considering the history of the people, places, and events connected with their historical novels. Particular focus is given to the author's experience of researching slavery in Saint Louis, Missouri during the 19th century. It is suggested that the work of historical research is interpretive in nature and involves evaluating conflicting and often biased evidence in the historical record.
