    • Abstract:
The article discusses people's understanding of fictionality or fictiveness and its consequences for the reading of the novel during the post-colonial period. It argues that the claim that political criticism distorts that distinctiveness of literature stems from a misleading account of the nature of fictional discourse. The author also suggests that there is a need for a better account of fiction and its relation to actuality if a program of political criticism is to be pursued effectively.
