      The author discusses issues related to the relationship between history and historical fiction. She cites English novelist Hilary Mantel's views on the unknowability of the past due to the partiality of the surviving evidence. She also argues that historical novelists are unconsciously fictionalising because they cannot all be right. She suggests that the best historical novelists know how to balance imagination and rigorous research.
