The article reports on studies related to the impact of air pollution in Mexico City on olfactory sensitivity and the ability to distinguish between different smells. Highlights include the impact of ground-level ozone on the DNA in alveolar macrophages and tracheal endothelial cells, an increase in number of single-strand DNA breaks in the olfactory epithelium of the long-term Mexico City residents, and the difficulty of measuring olfaction across time and geography.
