    • Abstract:
Democratic Representative Lane Evans on Tuesday made the first high-profile endorsement in next year's U.S. Senate race— throwing his support behind Chicago, Illinois state Senator Barack Obama, the Decatur Herald & Review reported. Evans, a liberal who represents a largely rural district in western Illinois, said he chose to endorse Obama— the only African-American seeking the Democratic nod for U.S. Senate — after meeting with many of his party's candidates in the race. One of Obama's leading rivals, state Comptroller Dan Hynes, responded to the Evans endorsement by releasing a list of endorsements that included 93 elected officials and 17 local Democratic Party chairmen from Evans' district.
