      The article presents a discussion of Tim O'Brien's novel "The Things They Carried," adapted from a presentation given at New River Community College on October 3, 2015 as the kickof lecture for a National Endowment of the Arts "Big Read" program in the New River Valley region of South Western Virginia. Topics include the challenge of presenting the book to two different audiences at the same time, a background on O'Brien, and the atrocity story of the American war in Vietnam in the novel.
