Asian Americans Caring for Elderly Parents in the U.S.

This qualitative study examined the experience of Asian-Americans who provide housing and financial support for first-generation Asian parents aged 65 and older. Thematic analysis of eight semi-structured interviews indicated that participants fulfilled their caregiving responsibilities out of love and not of filial piety obligation. Participants also reported positive and negative effects of caregiving on family relationships and on financial and housing plans; the difficulties associated with their own decreased independence and seeing parents age; the benefits of receiving parents' instrumental support and of closer grandparent-grandchild relationships; and the expectation of non-financial care from their children.
