    • Abstract:
Not developed strictly for performance, Capoeira, a Brazilian "fight-dance," is believed to have originated partially out of necessity. Legend has it that male African slaves brought to Brazil centuries ago made up this "game" as a pastime, a means of self-expression and a way to preserve the culture they were robbed of, as well as to develop a clever disguise for the practice of fighting skills. Capoeira is no longer practiced with the intent of harming an opponent, but the moves are a martial-arts-like series of attacks, counterattacks and rituals, resembling a dance in the constant flow of movement and the players' musicality and theatricality.
