The article discusses the history of immigration of refugees into Canada, beginning in 1783 when the British evacuated 2,744 former slaves from the United States. Escaped slaves continued to seek refuge in Caranda throughout the 19th century, often using the Underground Railroad. Other groups seeking refuge included Jews and Doukhobors fleeing the Russian pogroms and persecution. Other topics include the Chinese Immigration Act of 1923, Russian Mennonites, and the 1939 refusal of the refugee ship SS St Louis which was returned to Europe and the Jews imprisoned and killed by the Nazis.
