    • Abstract:
The article traces the history of theater from 1778 until 1993. In 1778, the U.S. Continental Congress suppresses theatre on moral ground during the Revolutionary War following a 1774 ban based on lawmakers' belief that theatre was a waste of money. In 1898, Jane Addams, co-founder of HullHouse in Chicago, announced plans for construction of a theatre building. In 1968, the Alliance Theatre was founded as the Atlanta Municipal theatre.
