    • Abstract:
Cartha DeLoach, an official of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), said that the FBI had no program of maintaining files on writers, or anyone in the communications profession, unless that individual, or individuals, concerned the subject of a possible legal violation of the law, or else some phase of intelligence under FBI jurisdiction. An FBI agent, who didn't want his identity revealed, said there was no conscious effort aimed at writers. A very random sampling illustrates the great range of writers under suspicion and the widely different uses to which the information about them was put.
