      A criticism is provided of the unpublished mid-20th century short story "The Conversion of Mary Green" by African American author Gwendolyn Brooks. The story's depiction of jazz music's relationship with African American ancestry in Africa, African American identity and community is discussed. An overview of the portrayal of the Christian church in the story is provided.
