    • Abstract:
The article reports on the record number of new magazines published in 1998 in the U.S. While in 1997 the industry produced more sex titles than any other category, 1998's top category was fueled by fantasies of another kind. With stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio and the Spice Girls fueling the "fanzine" market, and publishers turning out tributes to Princess Diana and Frank Sinatra, 125 new titles about media personalities were published in 1998. Despite the high number of special issues, more than half the new titles were produced more than once.
