This article focuses on the efforts of television reporter David Bloom's family to carry on since his death. While covering the war in Iraq in 2003, a blood clot caused by a condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) traveled to his lungs. Two years later his widow Melanie Bloom, who lives outside New York City, is using the tragedy to prevent others by raising awareness about what has often been called a silent killer. She is a paid spokeswoman for the Coalition to Prevent DVT, a position she took with encouragement from David's former colleague Katie Couric. INSET: WHAT IS DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS?.
