In this article, the author shares a brief history of the periodical on the occasion of its 120th birthday. Way back on March 17, 1886, when Al Spink published Vol. 1, No. 1 in St. Louis, the periodical focused heavily on baseball's spring training preparations, including those of the Chicago White Stockings. They did that because they believed baseball was the only American sport of note, and they couldn't get their hands on a good, inexpensive 8-megapixel digital camera. But if readers think about what constitutes sports today vs. what constituted sports then, readers will understand the fun and folly in speculating about what will constitute sports in the next century-plus.
