    • Abstract:
The article looks at the history of Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay, California. The island has a strategic position near the mouth of the bay. Angel Island served as a military base from the Civil War to the cold war. It was a staging area for soldiers shipping out to, or returning from military campaigns, including the Spanish-American War of 1898 and both world wars. The island also functioned as the Ellis Island of the West, where, from 1910 to 1940, mainly Asian immigrants were detained.
