      This article reports that the administration of president George W. Bush was surprised when the intense conflict between Hizbullah and Israel flared up in July 2006. At the time of the outbreak of the hostilities the administration was preoccupied with the war in Iraq and the 2006 G8 summit meeting. The Bush administration backed Israel's right to defend its borders and American allies in the region, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan issued statements condemning Hizbullah.
