    • Abstract:
The article reports on the closing of Iraq's National Library and Archive, the country's largest depository of books and documents. Saad Bashir Eskander, the library's director general, said he decided to close the institution on November 21, 2006 after several staff members were killed and the building had increasingly come under fire. Reportedly, the institution and its collections experienced significant damage shortly after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003, but after it was repaired, it became an important place for students and scholars in Baghdad.
