      The article discusses the implication of new scholarship of exile motion picture directors in Weimar, Germany. According to the author, the context of Weimar culture is relevant to understanding the work of these exile directors in Hollywood. The author proposes that the film noir from 1940 to 1950 conveys the crisis of male identity resulting from World War I by way of the femme fatale character. The article also offers an examination of the traumatic conditions of post-war Weimer that constructed the woman as criminal.
