      The article presents a comparative analysis of the 15th-century English bandit narratives of Robin Hood and those of the 19th-century Spanish figure Jaime el Barbudo. The social influence and significance of bandit stories within common and elite circles is discussed, identifying the prospective audiences of the narratives, analyzing the political agendas of the stories, and describing features of their cultural reception. Both folk heroes are examined through the theory of "social bandits" as developed by the scholar Eric J. Hobsbawm.
