    • Abstract:
Details the Guest Reader Program, conceived by Library Media Specialist Katherine Bassett, that took off like a rocket in the small island community of Ocean City, in southern New Jersey. In response to the constant question `Why do I have to read?', Bassett decided to invite volunteers to read aloud and point out to the students the importance of being a good reader. Nonresponse was the biggest fear; In two years more than 150 volunteers have participated; The students' interest in the Persian Gulf War increased their interest in reading. Guest readers have brought books alive to the children of Ocean City.
