      The article discusses the book "Cherry Grove, Fire Island: Sixty Years in America's First Gay and Lesbian Town," by Esther Newton. During the years covered in this book, from the 1930's to the 1980's, hundreds of thousands of gay men and lesbians vacationed in Cherry Grove, a place where finally they constituted the majority. Indeed, Newton came to write this book after a stressful vacation in the Catskills where she and her lover were relentlessly harassed by homophobic preteen boys.
