Partly that's because women tend to be older when they have heart attacks, says Donna Arnett, Ph.D., dean and professor of epidemiology at the University of Kentucky's College of Public Health. And while rates are rising for everyone, there's been a sharper increase among women: Suicide rates for women rose more than 50% between 1999 and 2017, according to a recent report by the National Center for Health Statistics (for men, the jump was 26%), and those over 75 have the highest rates.
