    • Abstract:
Property acquisition could be one of Detroit, Michigan's biggest challenges and expenses as it seeks to build a new convention center. Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick announced on Friday that the city plans to build a convention center to be open by January 2009 instead of extensively renovating Cobo Center. The new center would have at least 1 million square feet of exhibit space and would cost about $1 billion. The city is keeping prospective locations under wraps; Kilpatrick said he doesn't want to encourage land speculation. Real estate experts say the $1 billion price tag is within industry standards.
