Trust: The Scarcity of a Cultural Resource in Argentina.
    • Abstract:
The present study develops a discourse-analytical approach to the topic of trust. On a theory level, we rely on a conception of trust that is derived from a view that assumes the social world to be constituted linguistically. Weaving together Sztompka's trust studies with Link's interdiscourse theory, we understand trust as a resource for action that appears in regular and power-charged clusters of statements. It can only be understood in the context of struggles for power and tensions within society. In the empirical section of the study we examine trust while referring to thirty comprehensive and episodic interviews with taxi drivers in Buenos Aires conducted in 2013. We analyze dominant language patterns with a view to different target objects of trust (general social order, institutions, organizations, products, persons in particular positions and persons in everyday life). The reconstruction of their distribution principle provides evidence of legitimate types of "telling the truth" and thus regarding the power effects in Argentina in the late period of Kirchnerism. • Abstract:
