    • Abstract:
The 2004 Butler & Tanner Book of the Year Nibble awarded to Profile for "Lynne Truss' Eats, Shoots & Leaves" capped what was in many ways a memorable year for small publishers. Profile sold 361,935 copies of "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" in 2003 and gained a rare spot for independent publishers on the bestseller lists. Coming in the same year as Canongate's paperback edition of Yann Martel's Man Booker Prize-winning Life of Pi—547,727 copies sold in 2003—it proved that small publishers could compete with the big players at the top end of the market. A side-effect of the success of both books is that Profile and Canongate are small publishers no more.
