This is an article that focuses on the trend among male celebrities of acting like idiots in films and on television. There's a new breed of American idol stalking the big screen. And he's as dumb as a bag of hammers. Meet the American Idiot. I'm talking about the male models played by Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson in Zoolander. Or the macho fitness mogul (Stiller again) in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. Or, most recently, the TV newsman played by Will Ferrell in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.It includes a scene where Burgundy signs off a news broadcast with a puzzled inflection-- "I'm Ron Burgundy?" In a world of correct behaviour, deliberate idiocy is the last refuge of the male ego. At the movies, self-aware satire of the unaware male has become a genre unto itself.
