      The article looks at the prospects of the right wing political party Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the context of state-level elections due to take place in Brandenburg and Saxony in September 2019 and in Thuringia in October 2019. It discusses the falling popularity of German Chancellor Angela Merkel of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) and of centrist parties more generally. The strength of AfD in the eastern part of Germany is analyzed.
