The article offers an opinion piece where the author suggests that Black and Hispanic people are seen as both essential and expendable in the American workforce. Historical connections are made to slavery as well as to exploitative medical experiments and research conducted against people of color. The COVID-19 pandemic is discussed in detail as is the high rate of death amongst Black Americans and Hispanics, who make up a large proportion of essential workers who work industries like health, construction and food service.
