      The dissertation discusses the theoretical foundations and practical implications of conceiving of organizations as systems of action, especially with regard to an organization's potential for change and innovation and the necessary structure of its established dialectic of control. The dissertation advances a postmodern, dual theory of organizations focusing on structures and processes, which is based on insights from anthropological theory, action research, and a case study of organizational behavior, learning, and change management in Swiss insurance company Helvetia Patria.
