      The authors express their opinion that AIDS case reporting may be placing a burden on clinicians and stretching the scarce resources of health departments. They examine the history of AIDS reporting and look at its use in the routine surveillance of HIV infection. AIDS reporting with the introduction of antiretroviral treatment is discussed.
