      The article focuses on applications of digital printing. Printers believed that they could produce high value applications if only their customers would ask for them. The customers, at best blissfully unaware and at worst totally confused by the technology, mostly glazed over at the very mention of variable data, PPML or database printing and have carried on much as before. Without the entrepreneurial customers, digital print service providers were doomed to increasingly competitive short run, on demand work and without knowing how to interface with digital print workflow, the entrepreneurs were limited to straightforward retail on the Web.
