- Abstract: The aim of this paper is to promote an understanding of the affective dynamics of Grounded Theory (GT) by considering the emotions that can be evoked by using it. A parallel relationship is highlighted between theory building and fantasy building in GT, which informs a discussion of the creative potential of an approach that aligns the rational tasks and affective experience of the researcher. Researcher anxieties are acknowledged and discussed to show how they can be applied back into GT research. An example is presented in which researcher anxieties are managed through the generation of three fantasies: containment, coherence, and purity/contamination. The paper emphasizes the importance of researcher emotion and affective dynamics as an integral part of the researcher's role and approach, as well as saying how and why the inclusion of such data strengthens and deepens the task of doing GT.
