      The article discusses the transformation of the diciplinary area studies on scholarship in Africa from a relic of the Cold War era to postcolonial criticism in higher education in the U.S. Topics addressed include the effect of area studies in Africa on scholarship and institutions, the response of scholars to the knowlege formed under the Africa studies label, and the influence of Western scholarship on African universties. The theory of knowledge emnating from Africa studies is mentioned.
