    • Abstract:
The article presents updates of the U.S. and the world from October 5 to October 11, 1887. The U.S. Secretary of the Treasury has approved the course of the Collector of Customs at New York in refusing to release the goods of a number of persons who tried to smuggle them, till they had paid the Government the full-assessed value thereof. A Mormon conference has been held in Salt Lake City, Utah, which adjourned October 9, but no President of the Church was chosen. Wilford Woodruff was sustained as the President of the Twelve Apostles and ex-officio of the Church. In another update, the negotiations between Italy and France for a treaty of commerce have been unsuccessful, the demands of Italy being inadmissible by France.
