INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF BASQUE SAILORS DURING THE CONQUEST OF LATIN AMERICA AND THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THE ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE IN THE XVI^TH CENTURY. (English)

This paper aims to analyse the role played by Basque seamen in the XVI^TH Century Castilian slave trade, focusing on two key figures: the slave carrier and the merchant. This proposal is not intended to be exhaustive, but it suggests a starting point for future studies. We would also like to raise a couple of names or profiles and to explore the research possibilities of this subject arising from the Sevillian archives, mainly the Archivo General de Indias and the Archivo Histórico Provincial de Sevilla. En el presente artículo analizamos el papel desempeñado por los mareantes vascos en la trata esclavista castellana del siglo XVI, con especial atención a dos figuras clave: el transportista de esclavos y el navegante- comerciante. Esta propuesta no pretende ser exhaustiva, sino plantear un esquema preliminar de cara a futuros estudios, sugerir una serie de nombres y perfiles a los que seguir la pista y sondear las posibilidades de investigación que esta temática nos ofrece en el marco de la documentación conservada en los archivos hispalenses, fundamentalmente la registral del Archivo General de Indias y la notarial del Archivo Histórico Provincial de Sevilla.
