      FEATURES The day after a minneapolis police officer killed george floyd, Guerline Jozef's mind was in the skies above the Gulf of Mexico. In 2018, the immigrant advocacy organization Freedom for Immigrants released a report documenting hundreds of allegations of racism and xenophobia in immigrant detention centers. In 2017, Trump ended temporary protected status - a designation that shields immigrants from deportation if their home country is undergoing a crisis - for Haitian immigrants. Most immigrant advocacy organizations only have the staffing to accommodate Spanish speakers from Latin America, so Jozef, a Haitian immigrant herself, saw a clear need for detained Haitians to speak with advocates who understood them - not just their language but also, to put it plainly, where they were coming from.
