- Additional Information
- Abstract: This article focuses on the theme of the persecuted wife in literature. In literature and folklore, the theme of the persecuted wife generally plays out according to three principal types of narratives. In the first case, the persecution of the heroine results from an unjust accusation of adultery by a male character whose advances she rebuffs. In the second, jealous female characters replace the children of the heroine with animals, leading to her ostracism. Finally, the third type revolves around the husband testing the loyalty of his wife in cruel ways.
