This article discusses the trend for young-adult (YA) novels, or teen chick lit in the U.S. The YA books have candy-colored covers and plucky female heroines. Except that instead of trying to excel at careers or love, these heroines face a much more difficult task: surviving high school. Sarah Mlynowski, whose fifth chick-lit novel, Me vs. Me, will be published in July 2006, snagged a movie deal for her first YA novel, Bras & Broomsticks.
