    • Abstract:
The article provides information on 19th-century French artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Sixty-nine of his paintings were featured at the Exposition Universelle of 1855 in Paris, France, but Ingres chose to leave the city to avoid criticisms against his works. Several painters did express negative opinions about the paintings. He spent almost half his career in Florence and Rome, Italy where he was obscure enough to achieve peace. Ingres is described as a keen observer of character and of the visible beauty around him.
