In this article the author examines the geopolitical issues arising from the independence movements in Latin America in the 19th century. The desire for independence from Spanish imperialism in Latin American colonies began with a decline in Spanish fortunes following the invasion of Spain by Napoleon and the subsequent Peninsular war. The impact of 19th century British naval power on the stability of Latin America is assessed. The article discusses the influence of France and the United States in the region.
