      Chapter I of the Fifth Book of the book "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ," by Lew Wallace is presented. It presents a letter from Messala to Gratus regarding Maxentius who had his campaign against the Parthians. The letter also recounts on Ben-Hur whom Messala thinks has purpose of vengeance for his country and his lost fortune.
