    • Abstract:
The article explores the relationship between the historiographic practice of early 16th century Spanish chroniclers and the historiographic theory of 16th century humanists. It considers the History of Indies genre of writings--which chronicled the discovery and conquest of the Americas--and discusses the historiographic models followed by authors such as Pedro Mártir de Anglería, Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo and Bartolomé de las Casas. The author also explores 16th century historiographic theory as proposed by authors such as Juan Luis Vives and Juan Páez de Castro.
