The article explores the relationship between the historiographic practice of early 16^th century Spanish chroniclers and the historiographic theory of 16^th century humanists. It considers the History of Indies genre of writings--which chronicled the discovery and conquest of the Americas--and discusses the historiographic models followed by authors such as Pedro Mártir de Anglería, Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo and Bartolomé de las Casas. The author also explores 16^th century historiographic theory as proposed by authors such as Juan Luis Vives and Juan Páez de Castro.
