    • Abstract:
The article discusses the historiography of midwifery and social conditions for midwives in England during the early modern period. The author suggests that historians have failed to consider the role that differences in the social status and wealth of midwives played in their medical practices. He discusses how records regarding midwifery from English parishes illustrate the perception of the work of midwives as a form of science and suggests this perception led to the increased participation of men in child birth procedures. The licensing of midwives by the Church of England and testimonials offered for midwives are discussed.
