The author focuses on a phenomenon in China called the "cancer village" which refers to a high number of cancer patients in some villages where water contamination is the most likely cause. The author suggests that cancer villages are cancer clusters in farming villages. He discusses aspects of the phenomenon such as the nature of the geographic areas of cancer villages and why they have appeared in China, avenues for protest by nongovernmental and local organizations and implications for sustainability policy.
