      The article discusses the 1960 Olympics held in Rome, Italy. It considers the efforts and influence of the founder of the modern Olympics Baron Pierre de Coubertin (1863-1937) and Pope Pius XII (1876-1958) in determining Rome as the location of the Olympics. An overview of the effect of Italy's fascist regime led by Benito Mussolini and Germany's Nazis on the Olympic games is considered. Other subjects considered include nationalism, sports, and athletics; World War II; and the influence of the Roman Empire on modern Italy.
