With the economy tipped to expand by over 3% this year the government of Australia is pretty hopeful of avoiding a downturn. The Olympics did come at the right time for Australians. They came at the end of a decade when Australia's growth outperformed that of the U.S. and NSW rode that growth. Increasingly the private sector is going to have to demonstrate that the taxpayer is better off with any of these formulae. Australia will always be vulnerable to the U.S. With the recession, a number of countries in the Asian region are attempting to shift their focus from exports to domestic growth.
